Members of the Jury

French citizens over the age of 23, jurors are taken at random from the electoral roll to sit on a jury at the Assize court and judge, together with the court judges, those accused of crimes.
The jury has 9 members if the court is sitting in the first instance on a case, which means for the first time. In an appeal, or the second instance, there are 12 members.
There are also standby jurors to replace any members who may be unable to continue.
The jury is present at all the hearings and discusses, with the judges, the guilt or innocence of the accused and the appropriate sentence.
During the trial, the jury is forbidden to discuss the affair with third parties or to glean information about the case from the media.
