Court of Law

The Palais de justice is often in the centre of the town, or, in some more modern situations, in a district specifically created for the law courts.
An example of architecture designed to be seen from a distance; the building looms above the streets and stands out because of its monumental nature - one has to climb a flight of stairs to reach the entrance.
In French, there is a difference between the two words tribunal and cour. The first is court of first instance, the second an appeal court. The cour d’assises (Assize court) is also a court of first instance but is not called tribunal because it depends on an appeal court.
