Portraits of the artists

Jean Salou

For a self-taught person who’s been constantly learning since childhood, watercolours are the answer to a technical imperative. The fact that they dry quickly obliges one to work rapidly in a short space of time, without a preliminary sketch, no touching up, and no reworking back in the studio. It’s a matter of capturing immediately what you consider to be essential.
I have participated in the efforts of 'Juristes sans Frontière', whose prime objective is to combat the impunity of crimes against humanity.
The status of amicus curiae has been bestowed on this organisation by article 74 of the Rules of Procedure and Evidence at the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague, created by the United Nations.
I represented the Bar of Rennes at the opening of the hearing concerning the accusations of genocide in former Yugoslavia. It wasn’t a show trial, and the work I did there on the spot was not intended for the media.
That enabled me to express my own emotions during those formidably intense sessions. The Governments of States proclaim human rights; but they are constantly bypassed, violated, flouted and betrayed.
There are two questions that remain: who should intervene and when?
